In Memory Of…

The Painted Turtle honors the memory of those who paved the way for the dream of Camp and worked tirelessly to make that dream a reality. Although they’re no longer with us, we celebrate their spirit and the legacy that lives on in all the children who get to just be kids at Camp.

Founding Board Member Gil Friesen

On December 13, 2012, The Painted Turtle lost one of its much-loved board members and great champions, Gil Friesen.  Gil was one of The Painted Turtle’s original founders and a guiding force in the camp’s development and vision.

His support and leadership were instrumental in helping to create a magical place where children with serious illnesses can just be kids. His heartfelt compassion and generous spirit will be deeply missed. We are forever grateful for the legacy of joy, celebration, and hope he has left for children and their families at The Painted Turtle.

Founding Board Member John Hotchkis

On December 14, 2017, The Painted Turtle lost one of its Founders and Board members, John F. Hotchkis. John was a stellar Founding Board member who learned of The Painted Turtle through his longtime friend, adventure sidekick, and even stage performance partner Paul Newman. John performed alongside Paul in many of the early Hole in The Wall Gang Camp Galas. Touched by the magic of that camp, John helped to bring that same magic to children on the west coast through The Painted Turtle. We are incredibly thankful for the legacy of generosity he has left for the children and families served at The Painted Turtle.
